Wind power - is it an economically viable power source?

Is wind power a viable economical source of power? By 'economically viable' I mean: Can it stand on its own, producing power profitably, without government subsidy?

This series of posts, at masterresource.org, details some of the reasons why we should think twice about relying upon wind power:

But this series of posts is about wind power specifically, a relic from this earlier period, which is inappropriately named, especially when applied to modern needs. Wind appears to be an electrical power source because it has some ability to generate electricity, which can be expressed as watt-hours, that is, energy. This is a term that we are fairly familiar with because it is the common measure of our use of electricity. But this is not power, which can be expressed as watts.
Wind Power Is Not Power at All

Addendum
According to a recent study, solar power rarely exceeds 20% of its promised predicted power output:

At each of the four highest peak demands of 2010 wind output was low being respectively 4.72%, 5.51%, 2.59% and 2.51% of capacity at peak demand.
